ABOUT

The Legendary Sam Cooke is about music, religion, romance, and history. Carla Cooke is the youngest daughter of the Legendary Sam Cooke. Carla’s future mirrors the image of her father. Carla crafted her sound in the church similar to her dad. The younger Cooke knows her father’s roots are so deep that Carla has become her own person and connects with her roots through her father’s music. Having her Father, her God Father, Sir Mac Rice, writer of “Cheaper to Keep Her” and “Mustang Sally” and her Uncle Recording Artist LC Cooke as inspirations, motivates the journey she is on as an Artist.

Carla Cooke’s style is diverse in Gospel, Christian, R&B, Soul, Pop and the contemporary sound that embraces today’s culture. Carla has the flavor of longevity that will maintain a fan and consumer base to make hits. With a strong vocal range and warm personality, Carla’s stage presence commands the environment wherever she performs.

Carla Cooke has a CD entitled “A Time to Remember” which covers renditions of her father’s hit songs including “A Change Gone Come”, “Summertime” and “Lost and Looking” as well as several compositions she wrote.

Recently Carla recorded two duets on Legendary Blues Artist Joe Louis Walker’s new compilation. He had this to say about Carla as an artist during his interview with Union Leader Newspaper: “I think if there was a star of this record that really makes this whole thing work, it’s Carla Cooke as well as Waddy. I very rarely say this but for the life of me, I can’t figure out why Carla Cooke is not a household name in the way that Natalie Cole is. She is extremely talented, and she has a voice that, once you hear it, you never forget it,”

Carla is currently on Tour with “The Sam Cooke Experience” and has performed on Broadway bringing the music of her Father to audiences with “ That Motown Band”. Carla has had the pleasure of performing her show on “The Soul Train Cruise with headliner “Baby Face” and the distinguished honor of performing on a show at Bergen PAC with her father’s friend “ Little Anthony”.

On June 22, 2019, Mayor Perkins of Shreveport, LA presented Carla with the “Key to the City” in honor of her father who encountered racism in the city. The same weekend Carla was given”The R&B Legacy Award” from the Montford Pointe Marines at their Annual Ceremony.

It was an honor for Carla to be chosen to sing “Walk on By” as a tribute to Dionne Warwick at the 2016 Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.  After her performance at the 2017 R&B Hall of Fame Ceremony with Gerald Alston of The Manhattans, Billboard stated, “The ceremony’s show-stopping moment was a duet on Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Austin and Cooke’s daughter Carla Cooke”.

David Friscic of the D. C. Metro Arts Theater Magazine had this to say about Carla’s musical talent after her performance of “I will Always Love You” at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Super Club; “Ms. Cooke very daringly sang the entire song a capella, with a purity of tone and a nuanced vocal power that (as actress Lily Tomlin would say) gave me “the goose bump experience”. Chills went up and down my spine and the whole audience stood up cheering and applauding. This was one of the moments when the performer transcended some very adequate lyrics to take the song to a much deeper and higher level by virtue of her sheer vocal artistry”. Be sure to read his entire Review of her performance in the News Section.

Carla Cooke proves that the apple does not fall far from the tree as she gives the listener the raw talent, emotion, beauty and charisma that has her carrying the Cooke family torch musically into the new millennium.

  2. Hi Carla,

Thank you for sharing your gifts of song and spirit with us all, continuing in the tradition of your father. As a young man, my passion for gospel and R&B led me to the then newly released “Man and His Music” double CD, where I discovered the brilliance, joy, business acumen and artistry of your father. I have never gone without a copy of that CD with me since.

I would love to have you as a guest on my nationally syndicated radio show. It would be an honor to include your influential voice and perspective in our program. I used my email to sign-on here. I also sent a formal invite to the email listed on your site. Wishing you a happy, healthy, prosperous and fulfilling year!

    All the best, Kevin

  5. Racine Williams

Hello Mr & Ms Cooke. My name is Racine Williams. I am the son of Racine Williams Sr. My father and your father were really good friends. My mother often speaks of your dad however she’s elderly now. She said your dad and my dad just showed up at the house in Queens one day LOL. I still remember a lot of the stories that they used to talk about but I was just a child. I just thought that you might would have liked to know what I’ve just told you tonight. God bless

    1. Thanks for sharing. God Bless you as well.

  6. Hello Carla!
I didn’t even know Sam Cooke had a daughter named Carla.
I was on YouTube and to my surprise and delight I came across a video of you on the Mike Huckabee show.
What a beautiful rendition of your father’s classic song, “You Send Me”.
It’s obvious that you carry the Sam Cooke dna in your voice as well.
I was born in 1964 so I was too young to know who your dad was at the time. However, over the years I’ve enjoyed listening to his classic songs, including his early days songs with the Soul Stirrers (“Wonderful” is my favorite gospel song your dad sang)
Nobody, and I mean nobody, could sing like Sam Cooke.
He had a silky smooth voice that was unmatched.
I’m so glad to know you are continuing to keep his music and legacy alive.
    God bless you!

    Jerry

    1. Thank you so much Jerry. I’m happy you enjoyed my performance and to know how much you love my father’s music and magical voice. I truly appreciate your message. God Bless you as well.

  14. Carla, I watched you on Huckabee and I was very impressed. I remember your father quite well. When You Send Me was a big hit in 1957, I was 13 and a huge Elvis fan, but your father’s song and voice really connected to me. I followed his music and career right up until his death. By the way, it is obvious that you are his daughter. Even your smile reminds me of him. You are a very special person in your own right. God gave you a marvelous voice and a sweet spirit. Though I have remained an Elvis fan all of my life, I look forward to following you as I did your father–the great Sam Cooke! I hope you come to Surprise, Arizona at some point, because my wife, Grace, and I will be there to see and hear you. May God continue to bless and keep you.

    1. Thank you so much. Guess what!!! I will be in Surprise, AZ on January 28th @ Happy Trails Resort. Please spread the word. I will be performing all my Fathers classic hit songs. Hope to see you there. Please come up and say hi after the show. Here is the link for ticket purchase.

Hi Carla, Been kind of a rough year for all of us, but I just wanted to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Believe it or not, after all these years, not many a day goes by that I don’t think about your Dad. I am sure that he is looking down in pride of you. GOD BLESS!

    5. mthames@aquavend.com

  15. Wow. What a beautiful voice. Saw Carla on Huckabee tonight. God truly gifted you just like your father! Hope you come to Atlanta soon!

  16. Ivan Robert Padjen

We are so looking forward to hearing you in Three Oaks. Your Dad has been an inspiration to me since I was 14. I am now 73. His voice, along with many others, led me to a calling. Working in the inner city of Chicago during the late 60’s and early 70’s. I happen to be the “only white boy” on our team, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I have said that if there is reincarnation, I want to come back as Sam Cooke! You hear of such stories often, but I want to hear you and the gifts you bring and, in the background, the essence of your Dad.

    1. Last night we had the pleasure and privilege of being a part of a magical experience of attending a Carla Cook concert at the Acorn Theatre. Carla doesn’t sing songs. She allows her soulful being act as a wonderful instrument and then gets out of the way. Carla and her band provide an atmosphere of pure connection with the audience. It was an experiences for the ages. Thank you. Ivan Robert Padjen

  17. Carla,
Hope to see you in Cleveland,Ohio one of these days
Your Father’s music I’m certain will play a vital part in the work we do at the Alive Inside Foundation rekindling memories for those who have trouble remembering many things but still can recognize & recall their “Beloved” Music which many times helps them to remember so much more>
As a singer myself I was blessed to become part of this work & my passion & mission has become reaching out to young musicians to offer them what I like to call a #PurposeBeyondPerformance in projects like this

along with reaching out to Artists like my dear friend 2016 Rock Hall Inductee Glenn Hughes ( Deep Purple ) to get their support.

Would love to meet & talk with you some day
    My E-Mail : wm@aliveinside.org

  18. My son Brian met you backstage after your recent concert in Chicago and mentioned how incredibly talented you are.
I grew up listening to your fathers music and am still a big fan to this day. I’m retired from the business but still love to hear fresh talented artists, it’s in my blood having grown up listening to Sam’s amazing voice, and other back in the day greats.
If you perform on the east coast I will make it a priority to be at your concert. Best wishes…
    Gerry Griffith

    1. Hello Gerry. It was a pleasure meeting your son and speaking with you on the phone. I look forward to meeting you in person!!

    1. As you know, I am of an advanced age, but I have a suggestion. If you are ever able to book a Southern California concert, I would be honored to be invited to take the stage with you to praise what a wonderful person your father was beyond his accomplishments in the music world. God Bless You

    2. Hi Carla,
Hope you had a joyous and blessed Christmas and New Year. Just thought I would like to have us honor your father on what would have been his 88th birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM

    3. Thank you Mike!! God Bless!

  21. Murdis Young Hamlett

Carla your voice is beautoful! Your father was a great singef.

    1. Thank you very much Murdis.

  22. Hi Carla, I’m sure you don’t remember me. The last time I saw you was at the premier of “Lawrence of Arabia” at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood at the intermission when your dad called out to me “Mickey” and hugged me when I recognized him and talked to him for a few minutes. I was a member of the Siamas family that owned Keen records that signed your dad to a recording contract to release his first record “You Send Me” which turned out to be the first million seller by a first time artist and first time release by a new label in the history of the music industry. I was in training to become a recording and sound engineer in our studio with two young employees that were my instructors, Herb Alpert and Lou Adler. I was involved in all of your dad’s recordings until he left for RCA Victor and actually sang backup with Lou Rawls, Jesse Belvin, and Aretha Franklin on several Keen recordings. Your Dad liked me on a personal level, spent many hours trying to teach me how to play guitar and even volunteered to sing at my church youth group meeting when he was at the top of the charts (#1`)with “You Send Me”) . I loved your dad and I think he loved me. I also knew Cassius Clay and he spent many years trying to re-open the investigation on your dad’s demise. Your dad was a loving person and a man of faith. He spent many nights at my family’s dinner table without a single thought about racism. I recently acquired a large poster of your dad pictured with his SAR record company. I would like to find it’s home with your family. It would be wonderful to hear from you..
    Thanks,
    Mike Thames 714-981-8230

    1. Hello Mike, Thank you so much for reaching out. I’m always so grateful to hear stories about my father from those who associated with him. I would love to acquire the poster. Thank you so much for the gesture. I will give you a call.

  30. Hello Carla Cooke. Some years ago, I purchased a photo of your father when he was with the Soul Stirrers. He signef the photo Sam Cook, yes without the “e” on the end. His original spelling of his last name. He came to Tampa, Florida in the late 50’s. I could not find another signature like this one after many years of searching. I would like to send you a picture of it thru my email. Hope to hear from you soon.
    Ronnie Moorer

    1. Hi Ronnie, Oh Wow! That’s an Original for sure! He added the “e” to his name for contractual reasons so that he could continue to record in his name. I would love to see a copy of the picture. The email address you can forward it to is ccookebooking@gmail.com. I’m looking forward to seeing it. Thank you for reaching out and for taking the time to send the picture to me.

Carla this has been on my mind for the longest.Muhammad Ali hit one one of his fights of many and your dad was in the house as he was trying to get into the ring Muhammad Ali saw him and shouted out to everybody let that man up here ! when Muhammad Ali was in a radio station talking on the air and apparently your dad must have heard him and went to the station when your dad walked in and sit down this is when Muhammad Ali said your dad was pretty just like him. Your dad and Muhammad Ali began to sing together. It has been on my mind for a while that if Laila Ali was in a radio station talking on the air and you came in and sat beside her and you to begin to sing Oh My God ! that would be HISTORY repeating it self! Carla looks more like her father than any of her siblings that I have seen. She has a beautiful voice as well. I wish her the absolutely best!

  50. Carla, your father was the inspiration of my entire life. He defined my life. I know my voice is crap compared to his… or yours…but here’s a present for you. https://soundcloud.com/philip-gregory/when-i-fall-in-love-scratch-take-1?in=philip-gregory/sets/covers-1
